The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) joined with the NYS School Facilities Association (NYSSFA) and the New York School Facilities Management Institute (SFMI) to provide training to school facilities directors and their staff on energy efficiency models, strategies and tools. Logo SFMI ColorCombining resources allowed for an effective plan of action to:

  • Collaborate with public schools statewide to identify training needs and establish goals
  • Collaborate with the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council to offer Building Operator Certification (BOC) training for facility directors and maintenance workers
  • Create a pool of trained energy efficiency mentors to share knowledge with their school building teams
  • Provide additional continuing education to address staff needs related to school building energy management

School facilities directors and recognized leaders in the field provided input useful to the development of energy efficiency training programs. In addition, NYSSFA's Energy Committee will use data from New York State Education Department building condition surveys to identify areas for improvement in school energy management procedures. Other survey results from NYSSFA Chapter leaders and members will determine and help prioritize energy-related education and training needs. Anticipated continuing education topics include the following:

  • HVAC controls
  • Lighting/LED upgrades
  • Preventative/predictive maintenance
  • Custodial processes
  • Benchmarking
  • Cooperative energy purchasing/procurement
  • Building envelope improvements
  • Energy efficiency and new technology
